Why an At-Home Electric Vehicle Charger is Worth the Investment
So, you’ve joined the movement. You now drive your very own electric vehicle. Congrats on your new car! You have taken a massive step forward to lower carbon emissions (and ultimately, savings in your bank account!)
If you’ve purchased an electric vehicle, you may feel overwhelmed due to relying on public charging stations which are all too few right now around Tampa Bay.
This is why an essential step in purchasing an EV is to purchase your very own at-home electric vehicle charger. While these chargers aren’t super common (yet), it’s absolutely worth the investment. No more waiting in line at EV stations or worrying if you’ll be late to work because you don’t have enough charge to make it.
Our electricians share the pros and cons of at-home charging stations so you can decide for yourself if it’s the right choice for you.
Why Are At-Home EV Chargers Worth the Investment?
Are at-home electric vehicle chargers worth it? The simple answer is: absolutely. If you want to save energy and power up without visiting a charging station, an at-home charger is a perfect solution. You should expect to charge your vehicle overnight, but this is much more appealing than sitting for an hour or two at a public station.
Another benefit? Depending on your state, you may have access to federal tax credits and other appealing incentives for EVs and charging.
Take Control
Once your electric vehicle charger is installed, it requires minimal planning to make sure you can get around town with a full charge.

What Are the Types of At-Home Charging Stations?
The three types of electric vehicle charging stations are:
Level 1 EVSE (electrical vehicle supply equipment)
Level 2 EVSE
Level 3 EVSE
Level 1 EVSE
A Level 1 EVSE needs 110-to-120-volt AC power to function. These are the slowest of all three types, charging your car at a rate of up to 5 miles per hour. These kinds of chargers function best for those who have plug-in hybrid vehicles instead of entirely electric vehicles.
To fully charge your vehicle, it will likely take 20 hours or more with a Level 1 EVSE.
Level 2 EVSE
This kind of charging station is a good fit for most electric vehicle owners, as they charge more quickly in as little as four hours. This way, it’s easy to plug up your car as you sleep to wake up to your EV fully charged and ready to drive.
L2 EVSEs require an upgrade to 240-volt outlets. This higher current will allow your vehicle to charge at a faster rate. The only drawback is you will need a professional electrician to upgrade your electrical panel for the proper outlet in your garage. But that’s what we’re here for!
Level 3 EVSE
L3 EVSEs are less common in residential settings, but they are by far the fastest available chargers. A dead vehicle can be fully charged in under an hour.
Are There Any Drawbacks to At-Home Chargers?
While an electric vehicle charger in your garage is worth the investment; the upfront costs may be out of your current budget.
If you invest in a Level 1 charger, it will take a much longer time to fill up your battery, meaning you will only be able to drive short distances most days. If you only travel one or two days per week and most of your journeys are close to home, a Level 1 charger will do the trick!
Otherwise, it may make more sense to install a Level 2 charger. Call Axiom Power to upgrade your electrical panel and install your EVSE with No Problems, Just Solutions!
