Fall into Cool(er) Weather with this Electrical Maintenance Checklist

Although it doesn’t get too cold in our sunny state of Florida, fall takes the edge off the heat and presents a great time to conduct some essential maintenance. Plus, Halloween is just around the corner, and many people like to fill their yards with all sorts of electrified decorations.

Safely Store Summer Electrical Equipment 

 

First, close out the summer season. Although grass doesn’t really stop growing in Florida, you’ll probably use your lawn mower and trimmer a bit less frequently. Make sure they’re stored away in the proper locations. Constant exposure to the elements might cause them to degrade prematurely. For electrical units, remember to check your battery packs and store them/charging stations in an appropriate location.  

 

Get Your Fall Tools Ready  

 

As you put away any summer equipment, it’s time to pull out anything you might need for the cooler season. Make sure to thoroughly inspect any high-powered equipment for any signs of damage. If you see any problems with the wiring, it’s time to have them repaired or replaced. 

 

If you have a pool, you might want to check your pool heating as you may not have used it over the summer. Your hot tub may be getting ready for more use too in the cooler Fall evenings; check that everything is still working properly with your unit. It’s also a best practice to clear any debris or leaves from the top of the heater and double-check any pipes for leaks.

Clean Up Leaves When They Fall 

 

Although our Florida falls aren’t as drenched in golden and orange hues as in some parts of the country, we still get fallen leaves! Don’t let them collect around outdoor electricals such as lighting, outlets, and décor. Otherwise, you might be inviting moisture into your electrical system – a surefire way to trigger a short circuit! 

 

Protect Your Outdoor Outlets 

 

Florida falls are no stranger to stormy weather, so make sure any sockets are safe from moisture. Covers can be effective, but we recommend installing GFCI outlets for better protection. This will trigger your circuits to trip at the first sign of moisture. 

 

Stock Up on Light Bulbs 

 

Since the days get shorter this time of year, you’ll be using indoor lighting more often. Go ahead and take the opportunity to stock up on some replacement bulbs, we suggest LED versions, as there’s a good chance you will have to replace some this fall and winter. Double-check that you’re purchasing the right wattage and compatibility!  

 

Be Cautious About Electric Blankets 

 

Electrical blankets can be a lovely and cozy way to snuggle up with your family for a holiday movie night. Just be sure to use these wisely. Keep drinks and liquids at a distance and never fall asleep with it plugged in.
