FIXED: How to Properly Reset Your AC After a Power Outage
It’s that time of year again, and Tampa Bay is facing the chaotic weather of the Gulf Coast. Plus, it’s rainy season everywhere in Florida. And that means there's a decent chance you will face a power outage. Generally, these are no big deal, and you’re back to normal life within minutes.
However, sometimes our storms can get severe and the power may get knocked out for a while. In our Florida heat, not having the power means no AC; which means it’ll get hot fast. When the power finally comes back on, you’ll want to get the AC going as quickly as possible.
Scroll down to get our guide to properly reset your AC after the power fails. (And what to do if it won’t start back up again.)
Why is My AC Failing?
There are many reasons you might need to reset your AC. The air conditioner is a complex unit with many mechanical parts all using electricity. Since your AC runs entirely on electricity, any electrical issues could cause problems with your unit. If you’re facing any issues with your air conditioner, make sure to contact Axiom Power as soon as possible for repairs.
During thunderstorms, electrical fluctuations happen as a result of high wind and lightning and other changes to the environment. Sometimes, this results in a complete power outage. When the power comes back on, a sudden intense burst of energy floods the electrical system, which can damage your circuit breaker.
The power turning back on could overload your AC
and damage the circuit breaker.
Besides a power outage, here are some reasons your AC might be failing:
Electrical issues
AC not shutting down
Circuit breaks down or trips frequently
If resetting your air conditioning with the following steps does not work, it’s imperative that you call a professional electrician from Axiom Power to check for safety hazards. A fire from a circuit that keeps breaking is the last thing you want!
How to Reset Your AC Properly
When working with electricity, it is always better safe than sorry. If you ever aren’t sure of the proper steps to take to stay safe, call a knowledgeable expert to inspect.
1. Turn Off Your AC Through the Thermostat
Like with your phone, resetting the AC requires turning it to ‘off mode.’ Your system switch will have a button or switch. It is important to complete this first.
2. Shut Off the Power to the AC System at the Circuit Breaker
Although you shut off the power of the AC system, you didn’t shut off the power flowing to the system. Go to the circuit breaker panel in your home and look for the switch labeled ‘central heating and air conditioning system.’ Turn this off.
3. Restart the Power
The old, fix: turn it off, and back on...Restart the power from the circuit breaker panel and then turn the unit back on. Then, wait for about 30 minutes as it usually takes some time for the air conditioner system to reset properly.
4. Turn on Your System
After that half hour is over, turn your air conditioner back on. If it properly resets, then your system most likely has not suffered any electrical damage. However, if your system is malfunctioning, won’t start, or shuts back off, you should call the reliable electricians at Axiom Power.
