How Electric Vehicles Took Over Super Bowl Ads This Year
These days it seems like everyone is getting into EVs! From Dr. Evil to a roof-jumping Robotic Dog, there was a lot of hype this year as most car brands focused on electric cars during the Super Bowl Ads. In fact, out of the 8 car commercials aired, 6 were on new and future electric offerings!
These are some of our favorite EV ads from this year's super bowl, and what we think about the oncoming electric revolution. Be sure to call the professionals at Axiom Power for any of your commercial or residential electrical needs in the Tampa Bay area! (813) 308-9328
Kia’s Robo-Dog
Out of all the commercials, this one made the biggest splash! Kia’s Robo-Dog commercial showed the journey of a dog running all over town to find its owner, when it finally finds them, its battery dies right next to their shiny new SUV, the Kia EV6. Luckily, hope isn’t lost, and the dog is then plugged into the charging port of the SUV, both showing that not only is the car electric, but the charging port can be used to power appliances or charge other EVs!
This commercial saw the biggest increase of interest compared to others, with a 921% surge in searches right after the commercial aired! The Kia EV6 is the first all-electric vehicle from the company, offering 300 miles of range off a single charge.
Zeus Co-Signs the New BMW iX
The next best growth in searches came from a co-sign from Zeus himself! Played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Zeus decided it’s time for retirement, settling down in Palm Springs. Finding it hard to adjust to his new life, this get electrified when he gets his hands on a new BMW iX, the latest EV offering from the prestigious car company.
This commercial saw a 782% increase in searches on Cars.com, directly following the commercial’s airing.
GM’s Nostalgia Machine
General Motors had two commercials for the super bowl, and both leaned into nostalgia to make some very memorable commercials.
Dr. Evil, from the Austin Powers franchise, made an appearance along with his full team of evildoers. Regarded as many as the funniest Super Bowl commercial, it was a big hit for showing off the full lineup of GM’s EVs; showcasing the electric Silverado, Hummer EV, and the Cadillac Lyriq.
The Chevy Silverado got a further spotlight with a second nostalgia-fueled ad featuring original cast from the Sopranos. In what looked like a new intro from a reboot of the show, the children of Tony Soprano meet together in a brand new electric Chevy Silverado. “A whole new truck, for a whole new generation.” The nostalgia hit extra strong as the commercial was directed by David Chase himself, although we aren’t sure if this makes the scene official canon for the Sopranos.
Both these commercials were especially effective in large part due to the casting decisions. Nostalgia is hit or miss, and GM took no chances by getting together the original casts for each commercial.
Polestar’s Simple but Effective Ad
Many people may not know about Polestar, which is most likely why the companies searches shot up 580-times their typical amount on Cars.com. Their ad had no punchlines, no big promises, no plans for mars, and definitely no “blah blah blah”. This is all according to their own words of course, with a commercial that focused entirely on the car and the car alone to make a statement, and make a statement it did!
During the game, the Polestar 2 jumped to the #1 most searched spot on Cars.com, showing that sometimes the best advertisement is one that leaves you wanting more!
