5 Tips to Stay Electrically Safe This Independence Day
The 4th of July is an exciting day here, as many people come into town to visit the beach or friends and family. While it is a great day to let loose, focus on our sense of freedom, and let go of any worries, there are still some important things to keep in mind when it comes to electrical safety.
Axiom Power is all about having a fun-filled day of relaxation and celebration, but don’t let your guard down too much. Here are 5 tips from our pros to stay electrically safe this Independence Day:
Don’t Light Fireworks or Explosives Near Power Lines
Don’t Swim Near a Marina
Don’t Climb Trees Near Power Lines
Keep Your Grill Away from Water
Use GFCI Outlets When Able
1. Don’t Light Fireworks or Explosives Near Power Lines
This may seem like a no-brainer, but when you’re having a good time (and are maybe a few drinks in), it may slip your mind. If you plan to use fireworks of any kind, even if you consider them “small,” you should do so in open areas with no trees or power lines close by.
If things go south and you end up causing an accident with electric poles or power lines, it is imperative that you DO NOT touch any part of the fallen equipment. You additionally need to ensure that kids and pets stay as far from the area as possible. And of course, call 911 immediately. While you may feel embarrassed about the accident, it’s best to remedy the situation as quickly as possible by contacting professionals.
2. Don’t Swim Near a Marina
It’s common knowledge that water and electricity are not friends. This means swimming around sites that may have electricity can be extremely dangerous. Marinas, piers, boathouses, onboard electrical systems, and more can have electrical current leaks that impact the surrounding water.
When it comes to water and electricity, it’s always better safe than sorry.
Never swim within close range of electrical systems.
For nearby swimmers, this can be incredibly hazardous and even life-threatening. Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) or straight-up electrocution would not be a fun way to spend the 4th of July... Avoid swimming anywhere near systems that involve electricity. Your life may depend on it.
3. Don’t Climb Trees Near Power Lines
If you are hosting a party, especially if kids are invited, there will be plenty of fun and games. While Independence Day is the perfect time for “horsing around,” be sure to set limitations and discuss electrical safety with children.
In particular, don’t let kids climb trees or hide in bushes too close to power lines. It’s not worth risking an electrocution accident.
4. Keep Your Grill Away from Water
If you’re having a 4th of July party, chances are there is a body of water nearby, especially if you are located in our stomping grounds of Tampa or Orlando. Whether you’re in the pool, on the lake, or by the ocean, make sure your grill is far away from any water sources.
Keep all electrical appliances at least 6 feet away
from the outer limits of your ‘splash zone.’
We recommended keeping your grill a minimum of 6 feet away from any water. This doesn’t just apply to your grill, but also to anything with electricity running through it. Be mindful of this if you’re hosting a party and ensure electric gadgets are far out of the splash zone.

5. Use GFCI Outlets When Able
GFCI, or ground fault circuit interrupters, can be lifesavers. If any electrical device plugged into a GFCI comes into contact with water, a GFCI will automatically trip and prevent electrocution. These handy outlets can prevent fires, burns, and even death.
GFCI outlets are strategically designed to pick up on the slightest variation in electric current. If this is detected, the GFCI will shut off your appliance before any harm can be done. To protect any outdoor appliances, for the 4th of July and beyond, call on Axiom Power to install GFCI outlets.
