Is It Time to Replace Your Outlets?

There are many aspects of the modern home that we easily overlook when considering maintenance. Many items have to be changed out every few years, but some last a lot longer. Electrical outlets usually start to show wear and tear after about 20 years, so most people don’t assume they would need to be changed, or just simply ignore a faulty outlet.

But, don’t ignore it! Neglecting to update electrical outlets that are showing wear can lead to a risk of fire or shocks! Today, our licensed electricians show you the signs that your outlet needs replaced.

If you notice any of these all-too-clear signals, be sure to call Axiom Power at (813) 308-9328!

  • Your outlet sparks when plugging in appliances

  • A warm faceplate

  • A broken faceplate

  • Loose slots

  • Ungrounded outlets

Let’s dive into why these are electrical problems you’re going to want to fix...

Your Outlet Sparks When Plugging in Appliances

This should go without saying, but when you plug in an appliance, your outlet should not be sparking. This is a very obvious and common sign of a wearing or damaged outlet but is often ignored or thought to be normal by some people. If your outlet is sparking when plugging something in, it is time to replace it!

A Warm Faceplate

Many homeowners assume an outlet being warm is not an issue, after all, most devices warm up when plugged in. But, if your outlet is warm, there is a good chance that it isn’t able to handle the electric current that is going through it anymore. It’s best to get it replaced before it fails or becomes a fire hazard.

Are your outlets warm to the touch?

That’s a clear sign it’s time to replace them!

A Broken Faceplate

Although it isn’t a sign of the outlet itself being damaged, when the faceplate (or cover) on an outlet is broken or cracked, it leaves the wiring and metal behind it exposed. Having the inside of an outlet exposed is dangerous as it increases the risk of being shocked.

Along with a risk of injury, leaving any wiring or metal exposed is a potential opening for water to enter the outlet. After all, this is why outlets have a cover!

Loose Slots

You know that one plug you never use because it always falls out? That shouldn’t be happening! If your outlet is loose and the plugs continually fall out of it, it’s definitely showing signs of wear over years of use and should be replaced.

Don’t just simply ignore a faulty outlet. It may be time to swap them out!

Ungrounded Outlets

Grounding provides an appliance or outlet with an effective way to discharge excess electricity. Outlets typically have a ground fault circuit interrupter, which protects the outlet (and your home) by shutting off automatically if an unintended current is detected.

Although this should be the case, some plugs may have been installed into an ungrounded circuit. Having your home inspected by a reputable electrician can give you peace of mind that all your outlets are properly installed and grounded.
