All Business: Hiring a Commercial Electrician
You’ve likely had to hire a residential electrician to come inspect your home from time to time or take care of pesky maintenance issues, but what exactly does a commercial electrician do?
These trained and licensed electricians focus on the wiring and electrical systems in commercial spaces, which often means handling large-scale projects. (One of our specialties.)
While the two kinds of electricians share a lot of knowledge and training, there are some key differences to note. If you’re planning to pursue a career in electricity or need to hire an electrician for a commercial job, our local electricians share some facts about the skillset of a commercial electrician.
What Does a Commercial Electrician Do?
Like residential electricians, commercial electricians install, maintain, inspect, and repair electrical systems. However, these skills can be pretty different when applied to a large building versus a medium-sized home.
You may need to hire a commercial electrician for:
Installing wiring and electrical components, such as switches, lights, and outlets
Maintaining the safety and integrity of electrical systems
Inspecting electrical systems to check that they are in good condition and up to code
Finding and fixing any issues within electrical systems
Reading and implementing technical drawings
Developing electrical systems for new construction
Adhering to local, state, and federal guidelines for wiring electrical systems
Guiding teams of electricians and teaching apprentices
What’s Required for a Commercial Electrician?
The type of wiring and power in a commercial environment is quite different than in the average home, so in most places, there are distinct licenses for residential and commercial electricians.
Residential electricity is one-phase, meaning electricity flows through a single conductor. Commercial electricity, however, is three-phase, meaning three separate conductors are necessary for transmitting electricity. Three-phase power supplies tend to be more efficient and can transmit three times the amount of power.
To become a commercial electrician, you will need a certain number of classroom and on-the-job training hours. Finding an apprenticeship can be a great way to complete these requirements.

Benefits of Booking a Commercial Electrical Contractor
If your office space or retail store has an electrical problem, think twice before trying to address it yourself or calling in a cheap, unlicensed ‘friend’ for repairs. PSA: If you don't know what you're doing you could end up doing more damage or getting hurt.
Here are 4 benefits to calling a commercial electrician for your next repair:
Guaranteed Work
Like most electricians, we guarantee our work. You can rest easy knowing that the work is done right (and to code) the first time.
Remember: you do your job, and let us do ours. If you attempt to do the work yourself, you could make things worse and only end up costing yourself more money/time in the long run.
We’re Insured
Professionally licensed electricians are insured. Meaning if something goes wrong you don't have to worry about paying out of pocket for more repairs or medical expenses for yourself or others.
Saves Time
When running a business, you know that time is a valuable thing. Why waste it wondering what’s wrong and then trying to figure out a fix?
A licensed electrician can likely identify and fix the problem right away because we're used to working with electrical fixtures.
Knowledge
A commercial electrician is more likely to be experienced in multiple areas and can work on a variety of projects. By choosing a professional contractor, you'll be more likely to have someone working on your issue who really understands the problem and how best to solve it.
