Buying Guide: LED High Bay Lighting

Recently LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights have become more commonly used for numerous lighting needs inside and out, and have become well-known for their energy-saving attributes and long-life. While popular in homes and office spaces, when it comes to high bay lighting, these LED lights are often used in large spaces such as commercial buildings and suspended at great heights. Think of a retail store, stadium, or church.

If you have a space with soaring heights, you need to take your lighting to the next level too. Here is a buying guide to help you choose the best LED high bay lights:

The Right Height for High Bay LED Lights

At home, choosing LED bulbs or ceiling lights with relatively low levels of brightness are best, while LED high bay lights, which are quite bright, are great for commercial or industrial lighting installations.

To meet lighting needs in various spaces, and levels of illuminance (the measure of how much light illuminates a surface), there are multiple kinds of LED high bay lights to choose from. 100W LED high bay lights would be suitable to be suspended from a height of 12-18 feet while 220W high bay lights are more suitable for heights of 18-28 feet.

Remember the height of lamp suspension will directly affect the illuminance achieved by the lights. If the LED high bay lights are installed at too great of a height by your electrician, they won’t be able to meet the lighting needs of your space. If the installation of your lights is too low, the space will be far too bright and could even give a sense of claustrophobia to some visitors.

You’ll want to create a lighting plan for your commercial space to make sure that from the time it’s wired, you have the right placement of lighting and then use the appropriate wattage for your area (don’t worry, we can help with both).

How To Choose Which LED High Bay Lights To Buy

LED high bay lighting is generally found in two styles: UFO and linear.

Linear

Linear high bay lights are rectangular in shape and have a beam angle of 110 degrees. The light from linear high bay lights will be more scattered.

To install: Suspend using two chains.

UFO

UFO high bay lights are shaped like round UFOs and have a beam angle of 120 degrees. These lights are best for narrow aisles. You can adjust the beam angle with a UFO LED high bay light, which you cannot easily do with a linear light.

To install: Hang using a suspension ring or with U-shaped brackets.

Wattage and Lumens

LED high bay lights come in many different wattage options and numbers of lumens. The efficiency of LEDs is not the same brand by brand, so look to the number of lumens when buying your LED high bay lamps.

Illuminance

Make it a more comfortable working environment with lighting that achieves the appropriate luminance. Did you know? The United States Department of Labor ensures that the standards for minimum illuminance are being met.

  • In warehouses and corridors, the minimum illuminance is 5fc

  • In general construction factories, the minimum illuminance is 10fc

  • In emergency and medical rooms, the minimum illuminance is 30fc

Before installing LED high bay lights, review relevant documents to see if your lighting will meet minimum illuminance requirements. Or simply call the pros at Axiom Power, and we will do all the hard work for you!

Mounting Height

The height where your LED high bay lights are installed will have an impact on the illuminance achieved by your lighting. To choose the right lighting, you must consider the height of the ceiling. By doing so, you can better calculate the illuminance of your chosen lighting and whether it will meet your needs.

Spacing

Spacing also plays a key role in how many LED high bay lights you will need. Your electrician from Axiom Power will help you determine how many lights you need to illuminate your entire warehouse or commercial space.

Light Up Your Commercial Space with LED High Bay Lighting

LED high bay lights are perfect for tall ceilings and larger areas. These kinds of lights focus the light more directly to create powerful long-range illumination for warehouses, retail stores, churches, and industrial spaces. While there are many options available when it comes to lighting for your building, choosing LED lighting will save energy, last longer, and illuminate your space beautifully.
