Retrofitting LED Lighting
LED lights seem to be all the rage right now. If you have an older building, whether it being your home or commercial space, it is never too late to jump on the bandwagon. There are many wonderful benefits to LED, including being better for your wallet, health, and the environment. If you are ready to make the switch from traditional lighting to LED but are not sure what to do next, you may want to consider retrofitting your existing lights.
What Does It Mean To Retrofit?
The term retrofit simply means that something new is being added on to versus replacing the entire thing. When you retrofit LED lighting you are replacing the components of the system—technology or an accessory—instead of replacing the entire system.
Retrofitting LED lighting utilizes the existing light fixture and the retrofit coverts older and more outdated technology such as fluorescent and incandescent lights to newer more energy-efficient technology, such as LED.
LED stands for light-emitting diode. These lights have become quite popular in the past decade or two and it is pretty easy to see why when you start learning more about them.

Benefits of LED Lighting
There so many wonderful benefits to using LED lights over other lights, such as fluorescent or incandescent. There are many benefits not only to the reduction of your energy bill but also to the environment.
Energy Efficient
One of the most popular reasons for using LED lights is because they are so energy efficient. LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than the other traditional lighting. This is a huge difference. For example, a fluorescent light is only able to covert 5% of its energy into actual light whereas a LED can convert 95% of its energy into light.
LED lights also draw less power to give off the same level of light. This means you only need a 36-watt LED light but would have to use an 84-watt fluorescent light.
Lifespan And Cost
An average LED light can operate from 50,000 to 100,000 hours. This is 2-4 times longer than traditional lighting. This means a huge reduction in the replacement of LED lights, which in turn means it is more cost-effective because you are not buying light bulbs as much.
This also has a direct impact on the environment and lowering carbon emissions. If fewer lights are being used there a drastically lower need for the resources that manufacture, process, package, and transport light bulbs.
Fewer Lights Needed
LED lights overall have a better quality of light distribution and dispersion. Less LED lights are needed to achieve the same level of brightness as compared to fluorescent or incandescent lights.
Safety
LED lights are cool to the touch because they generate almost no heat. The heat that they do generate is so small it is almost immeasurable. This is a significant benefit to LED lights as the potential dangers for burns or fires are drastically reduced.
LED lights also do not emit high levels of ultraviolet radiation like fluorescent lights.

Retrofitting LED Lights
The upfront initial cost of LEDs can cost more than traditional lighting, but since they are more energy-efficient there will be tremendous savings in the long-term.
If you were to replace all the lights in a residential home with LEDs you could save around $300 a year on energy costs. Just think of the savings of a larger commercial building! By retrofitting LED lighting, you will more than make up for the slightly higher upfront cost.
There are 3 ways to retrofit LED lighting:
1. Direct lamp change-outs
This is the cheapest option and simply requires changing out a traditional light bulb for an LED light bulb.
2. Retrofit kits
This kit using LEDs and a driver will mount directly to the existing luminaire housing. You can keep your original light fixtures with this option.
3. Replace entire fixtures
This option is the costliest. It requires replacing the entire existing light fixtures with new LED fixtures.
