Electrical Considerations When Building Your Custom Home
Building a custom home is an incredibly exciting experience, but it also comes with a handful of challenges and phases to take into consideration. Electrical wiring is a significant aspect of the new construction process, so it’s important to have the best licensed electricians on your side. After all, you want to see that beautiful custom build.
Don’t live in the dark! In this article, our electricians share the different stages of wiring a new home and what you will need to consider when developing your blueprints. Let’s spark the conversation...
Why It’s Important to Hire an Electrician from the Start
At the start of the new home construction process, many homeowners are unaware that they even have a say in their electrical plan. The perk of designing a custom home is just that – it's completely custom!
When you sit down with our residential contractors at Axiom Power, we’ll help you develop a plan to map out where you’d like lighting, outlets, and other electrical components to live within your home.
Incorporating an electrician into your team from the start ensures all phases of the construction process run as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
The Phases of Wiring
You may have heard of single-phase and three-phase power, but those aren’t the kind of phases we’re discussing here. Throughout this guide, we cover the planning phase of electrical wiring to working outlets and light switching.
The five phases of wiring include:
Temporary wiring and underground conduit installation
Primary Electrical Installation Phase or Rough-In
Primary Electrical Installation Phase II or Temporary Wiring
Secondary Electrical Installation
Testing
1. Temporary Wiring and Underground Conduit Installation
This first phase of wiring involves supplying power to all of the equipment that will be necessary to start the construction process. Trust us, our trades partners care about this key step.
Temporary installation powers up the tools that will bring your new home to life. Additionally, power conduits and any necessary receptacles are laid down before the foundation is complete.
As you can see, your electrical team should be involved from the very beginning of the construction process.
2. Primary Electrical Installation Phase or Rough-In
Once all of the walls and floors are laid in, the primary electrical installation phase begins. The roof goes up, so lights and extractor fans will be installed. Additional wiring from the electrical boxes to the wall studs is also completed.
Last, but certainly not least, wiring for any entertainment systems is put in.
3. Primary Electrical Installation Phase II or Temporary Wiring
At this point in the process, the general layout of the wiring has already been established. Necessary receptacles are installed, which provide easy access of cables into rooms.
Critical light switches and temperature control systems are wired up, although they aren’t necessarily permanent since they may be damaged in the final phase of construction.
4. Secondary Electrical Installation
In this stage of installation, the following are incorporated into the home:
HVAC controls
Lighting
Switchboards
External electrical devices
At this point, appliances are wired to specifications. Even if you aren’t having the builder put in ceiling fans or custom light fixtures for you, you will want to make sure everything is properly wired and ready to go. (Need a hand with adding these later? Remember you can call/text us anytime!)
5. Electrical Testing
Last but not least, your licensed electrical contractor completes thorough testing of all lights, switches, and wiring, making sure to correct any problems that may arise. If any final changes or minor adjustments need to be made, this is when it’s done.
