How to Install a Ceiling Fan
Not many electrical fixtures affect a room in such a profound way as a ceiling fan does. A ceiling fan does more than just provide increased circulation; it is also a statement to the home’s design and style. A ceiling fan is also an easy solution to lowering your energy bill. And the best part about this versatile fixture is it is not that difficult to install!
With some simple wiring knowledge and a few hours, you can make this DIY project a success (though our local electricians are here if you need a hand...). Now, let’s get to work on that ceiling fan!
Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan
One of the most important things you will need to know before installing a ceiling fan is knowing what size ceiling fan will work best for your space. Ceiling fans are not one size fits all! If you do not use the right size fan for your space you will compromise the efficiency of the airflow.
Before you install the fan, make sure your new fan blade tips will be at least 30 inches from any objects or walls. You will also want to have at least a 7-foot clearance between the blades and the floor so no one, of any height, will risk running into the fan.
Here is a quick ceiling fan size cheat sheet:

We are more than happy to recommend the right size ceiling fan for maximum output and efficiency for your space. Of course, once you pick the one you like, we can install it too!
What’s Needed to Install a Ceiling Fan
Although this is a beginner to intermediate DIY project, you will want to make sure you have all the right tools and materials first before you get too involved. We recommend you have on hand:
A ladder
Safety goggles/dust mask
Screwdriver
Wire cutters
Pliers
Drywall saw or reciprocating saw
Voltage tester
Swapping Out the Fixture or Adding a New Fan?
You should also make a mental note to see if you are swapping out a ceiling fan fixture for an existing ceiling fan or if you are switching out an existing light fixture for a new ceiling fan.
The biggest difference is the weight--a ceiling fan will weigh more than a regular light fixture and will need more support. Make sure to purchase a mounting bracket that will be secured to the electrical box!
Lastly, before you physically start installing the ceiling fan you will want to make sure to TURN OFF the power to the outlet and the circuit breaker panel.
It is a good idea to use electrical tape to cover the switches at the wall and at the breaker box (or closing and locking the panel door) so no one walking by will accidentally turn the power back on while you are working.
How to Install a Ceiling Fan
Now you are ready to start physically installing your ceiling fan. Remember: installing a ceiling fan where no fixture previously exists will be a greater challenge due to structural support and wiring. If you’re feeling uneasy, call us and we’ll help you out.
Here are some basic step-by-step instructions if you’re ready to DIY it:
Double-check you have turned off the power to the fixture at the circuit breaker
Dismantle and dispose of the old light fixture or ceiling fan → use your voltage tester to double-check there are no live wires
Assemble the new ceiling fan per manufacturer's instructions
Install a fan brace → this will allow you to mount the electrical box between the two ceiling joists without accessing the attic
Mount the junction box
Mount the bracket of the ceiling fan → thread the main wires through the center of the bracket
Place the downrod of the fixture → make sure to always check the angle of the ceiling before installing the downrod
Connect the ceiling fan to the household wiring → this step will require basic wiring knowledge, but in most cases, you will match the colored wires to each other. The fan’s motor will connect to the white (neutral) wire
Attach the blades (and light bulbs, if any) to the fixture
Restore your power and enjoy your new ceiling fan! You did it!
