Chill Nights in the Hot Tub: All You Need to Know About Installation

Although it doesn’t get too cold in Florida, this time of year presents the perfect cooler evenings for getting the bubbles going in the hot tub. If your Tampa or Orlando home doesn’t already have a hot tub or you are ready for an upgrade, that’s what we’re here for!

If we could give one piece of advice to hot tub-loving homeowners, it would be that this is not something to Google and attempt to DIY. Unless you are a licensed electrician, you shouldn't try to wire a hot tub on your own. Seriously.

If you’re thinking about installing a hot tub, there are a few things you need to know about electrical requirements and general safety.  Remember: when you’re ready to relax in your new spa, call/text us to see the difference of our expert electrical solutions.

How Many Amps Does a Hot Tub Require?

First, when you install a hot tub, you’ll need to make sure it has the proper power supply. This is why you must work with a licensed electrician. We’ll be able to run any necessary wiring to the spot that your new spa will call home.

The typical power supply for a hot tub ranges between 220 to 240 volts and 30 to 60 amps. Some smaller tubs can get by on 110/120 volts, but the majority of systems require a higher current. Most houses built in the last few decades should be able to supply this electrical load without a problem, but houses that are older than 40 years old may need significant electrical upgrades before installation.

Our electricians can access the necessary wiring components through crawl spaces, the attic, or electrical panels around the home.

Are There Safety Requirements to Install a Spa Hot Tub?

As with many large electrical appliances, there are specific technical requirements. Plus, in most Florida cities and counties, you need certain building permits for the outdoor construction and electrical circuitry involved in hot tub installation. When you work with Axiom’s electrical contractors, we can help make this happen, no problem.

While these requirements and codes may just seem like a headache and a nuisance, they are vital for ensuring the safety of the hot tub’s occupants while preventing potential electrical shocks and fires that can be life-threatening.

Every hot tub installation needs to incorporate the following safety considerations:

Emergency Shut Off

If you install a hot tub, we like to include an easy shut-off mechanism in case of an emergency. A clearly labeled water-tight emergency switch should be located in the direct line of sight of the hot tub. The best switch is a large red push button on a nearby wall or fence. Always make sure it is at least 5 feet away but close enough that it’s easily accessible.

GFCI

In any situation where water and electricity may potentially come into contact, there is a risk of electric shock. Because of this, a hot tub should have a GFCI or a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.

A GFCI works by detecting small differences in the amount of electricity flowing into a circuit versus what is flowing out, even with currents as small as 4 or 5 milliamps. If this difference is detected, the GFCI will rapidly trip the circuit.

Clear from Power Lines

A hot tub should never be installed beneath power lines. Working with an electrician will ensure your hot tub’s location is safe and as hazard-free as possible.

No Underground Wiring

If possible, it’s ideal to not run any wiring under an outdoor hot tub. If for whatever reason, space does not allow for this, wiring needs to be installed in a rigid metal conduit or nonmetallic raceway system specifically designed for burial. Your electrician will know the proper requirements for wiring your hot tub, but you should be informed if you ever decide to make any changes.

Keep Lighting at a Distance

Low-voltage lighting should be at least 10 feet away from the hot tub. Once again, your electrician will be able to share any specific measurements with you so you know where it’s safe to install fixtures.
